Though teaching, I am able to help students relieve the fears tied to this elemental art form, allowing them to embark on an unencumbered search for creating their own visions in this exciting and dynamic medium.

Teaching Experience:

2011-Gould Academy, Bethel, ME.  

A sophomore, four-point teaching intensive, creating a 45 foot, hanging sculpture of forged steel and pipe, which was created and installed with students and teachers, as well as  students’ creating personal objects and signs for the campus


September- November 2010 Gould Academy, Bethel, ME

Taught trimester sculpture class with forged iron and stone, working with students on individual and collective sculptures, as well as creating metalwork items with students, teachers and for  exhibit around campus.


October 2010 - New England School of Metalwork, Auburn, ME

Taught week-long adult class of forged and fabricated metalwork with designs focusing on flora and fauna.


July 2010-Seamark Arts Camp, Deer Isle ,ME

Held sculpture workshop with elementary school students, over July 4th week end, resulting in a working blacksmith shop float for the 4th of July parade.


2009, Haystack School of Craft, Deer Isle, ME

Taught opening session, art educators’ workshops and assisted instructors.


2009, Bay School, Blue Hill, ME

Taught blacksmithing in fall/ spring sessions to 7th and 8th grade students

1978 took lessons from a blacksmith, forged my first crowbar

1985 forged prothtesis for a friend, worked!

Apprenticed to blacksmith, David Thompson, Eugene, Oregon

self taught, made lots of mistakes....


General Education

  1. Demonstrated at craft shows, learning metalworking techniques

  2. Gave demonstrations, and learned from an established group of metal artists in the North West Blacksmith Association

  3. Participated in several conferences of the Artist Blacksmiths of North America

  4. Traveled to Europe for a tour of iron workers to Paris, France, Aachen, Germany and Antwerp, Brussels. 

  5. Grew up watching, working and collaborating with his father Artist Zeke Ziner, who experienced great success as both a commercial and a fine artist, working as an illustrator, painter, printmaker and sculptor in Chicago, New York and Montreal. The elder Ziner’s work work has been shown in the Chicago Art Institute, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, among many other galleries and museums.
